5G technology, or the fifth generation of mobile connectivity, will play an important role in the Internet of Things and in the development of smart cities, and is closer than ever.

What is 5G Technology I should have been home, but a last-minute email made me lose time. It is much colder than it was yesterday, so while I waited for the elevator to open I opened the living room to warm up with my cell phone; I'm sure my wife will be home soon and she will enjoy it… As soon as I started my car engine I got a call from her, she forgot her smartphone in the office and needed me to open the garage door into my home. She says "thank you, my love" as the sound of the gate lift is heard in the background. As soon as I got home, I was greeted by a few garden drones that helped my wife take care of her plants. They do not make mistakes when it comes to keeping track of the humidity and temperature required by each of them. Hewu! They seem to be reading my mind, as their daily report recently posted on my smartphone can inform me of the lack of fertilizer. I confirm the order automatically set by the system, and I go inside the house

In this case on any given day after work to be a quotidian without falling bandwidth, we still miss the construction of a new wireless network that can make it very clear: 5G technology, in other words, the fifth generation of mobile communication. Let's get into it.

The facts of 5G are amazing

5G is the fifth generation of mobile connectivity. A little over 3 years ago, LTE or what we know as 4G connectivity came to shake the smartphone world and increase data transfer speeds, so we no longer know this concept. However, it seems that what we experienced at that time will come to an end compared to the vast majority of opportunities that are held under this new generation of wireless connectivity, built on previous foundations.

A great way to show this with big data. The standard 4G LTE transmission speed currently available on our smartphones in Spain, for example, is located around the 21 Mbps signal, allowing for unlimited music streaming and web speed. Well, 5G connection speeds will be able to reach over 10 Gbps, which means, between 100 and 1000 times faster, making it easier to download, for example, HD movies in 10 seconds.

This amazing speed is combined with great data transfer capabilities, 10 Tbps, and a maximum of 1 million data per Km². Alternatively, the connection latency is expected to decrease from 50 milliseconds to just 1 milisecond. In other words, 5G technology will allow for reduced communication latency, increased data transfer rates, significant improvements in mobile access and will allow millions of devices to connect simultaneously. This, in fact, is one of the key factors in foreseeing that 5G technology will go far beyond the realm of smartphones.

Significant improvements brought about by 5G

Increased range: It is expected that there will be a million nodes per km2 to reach more users, and network availability will be almost 100%.

Extra speed: 5g will reach download speeds above 10Gbps, faster between 100 and 1,000 than the previous generation, and will be able to download the movie in 10 seconds.

Very low power: 5G connectivity will mean a reduction of up to 90% in network power consumption.

Low Delay: With 5G the delay will be from 50ms to 1ms so that data is transmitted almost in real time and the delay is not significant.

More users connected: With 5G, about 100 times more users and devices than 4G can be connected, without network overload or failure.

Is 5G technology a missing piece in the Smart Cities puzzle?

Thanks to these data on improvements in transmission speed and connectivity quality, the 5G network puts us at the age of “everything connected” or the Internet of Things. It will allow us to create a realistic environment that can transcend the smartphone world, which is likely to be a non-existent piece of puzzle to build truly intelligent cities.

5G technology will be the key to allowing millions of devices to connect simultaneously to crowded locations. In addition, it will make connections between those devices, connecting the smartphone to the garage door at home or the alarm clock and the coffee maker, so that we can get up and get freshly brewed coffee. But there is so much more to it. With 5G technology Car2Car communications can be more efficient and secure, thus allowing real-time feeds in terms of traffic conditions or accidents. The same is true with a 360 ° reality, which could exploit the possibility of a decrease in latency and data transfer capacity to produce real physical environments.

Applications for daily life 5G:

  • Ø  Increasing download and video speed
  • Ø  Internet of things, IoT
  • Ø  Uninterrupted connection on the go
  • Ø  Car connection to car
  • Ø  The real truth in broadcasting
  • Ø  Telemedicine

Speaking of delays, data-based voice calls or video calls, such as Skype, are the ones that will benefit the most, as they do not have time for delays or failures. The same will apply to mobile connectivity: with 5G technology we will be able to stream movies while traveling by train at the same quality that we watched at home.

How long will it take for 5G technology to arrive?

All research is available in 2020 as the year in which 5G technology will be integrated, although the network will be implemented in 2018 and most staff, regulatory bodies and manufacturers are currently participating in standard-setting negotiations, as previously the deployment of 4G technology. In fact, Qualcomm has already launched the first 5G modem, specifically designed to support this type of network, thus paving the way for a new generation of smartphones. For its part, the European Union wants a complete overhaul of 5G by 2025. In this fast-moving natural world, that day is fast approaching.

On the road, you want 5G

With that in mind, I traveled across Washington, D.C., a municipal area looking for 5G using the iPhone 12 Pro on the T-Mobile network. While T-Mobile has no millimeter-wave coverage in the DC area, its low band 5G is ubiquitous, and its mid-band 5G coverage can be found in the North West Washington suburb, where the White House, National Mall and a large number of lobbyists.

You can also find Verizon's millimeter-wave 5G on certain streets in D.C., and across the Potomac River in North Virginia. Verizon's Nationwide 5G covers a large area of the metropolitan area near D.C., but there are many gaps where there is no 5G - especially in poor and rural areas.

AT&T shows 5G coverage in a large area, but does not distinguish between millimeters, low bandwidth and 5G band bandwidth. The integration is better than Verizon but not as perfect as the availability of T-Mobile, which is almost universal.

The iPhone 12 will notify you when you are in a 5G location because there is a 5G icon next to the battery icon. However, it does not tell you what type of 5G you are using. A good way to do that is to use speed tests. I did that by using the FCC speed test app while driving in areas with 5G.

The results were encouraging. In areas with 5G signal strength, I was constantly seeing a download speed of 130 megabits per second. In areas with mid-band coverage, the speed is measured at more than 300 mbps. This is high enough to do things like transfer large files or download apps. I was able to download the iOS update while sitting in the basement of Washington VA Hospital, an area that had no cell phones before.

5G installation is always solid

Examining the scope of the low 5G band, I headed southwest from Washington to Charlottesville, Va., I found solid 5G cover all the way. On the same route a few weeks ago, 4G LTE coverage was visible in some areas, but 5G coverage was strong. Most of the area is very rural, which is also encouraging.

AT&T low band coverage and distance features can be similar to what I found with T-Mobile. However, AT&T coverage is less complete. While the most densely populated areas in the Northeast are well covered, 5G ceases to be available less than 100 miles south of Washington. Verizon's 5G is becoming smaller in southern Washington, although major cities are covered.

While you may not be affected by the installation of 5G near Washington, the same basic features will still be available in any area near you. Typically, T-Mobile coverage will be available in most locations, with faster coverage in areas where Sprint had a visible presence. The spread of the T-Mobile millimeter-wave is found in seven major cities.

AT&T has its own 5G nationwide distribution that is widely available in the U.S., but it is not as widespread as the one T-Mobile has. However, it is available even in rural areas using its 850MHz network. Verizon covers major cities, and their millimeter-wave coverage is growing. Whereas Verizon had a few corners of unpaved roads, it now has many highways connected to D.C. and other major cities. However, Verizon coverage nationwide is very limited.

To find out how this affects you, your best bet is to look at the carrier maps for each carrier, but while useful, they are not as specific as they could be. For example, while it's easy to see where Verizon's 5G signal is located, T-Mobile maps will only show their low and mid-band coverage. AT&T shows 5G but doesn't say what kind.

Not all 5G devices work with all 5G signals

It is also important to note that not all 5G devices work with all 5G signals. Depending on the device, some may not work with millimeter-wave 5G, for example, while others may not work with band-low 5G. It is probably best to make sure that there is a good return policy so you can get your device back if it can't get 5G in your area. Note that most high-end 5G devices, including the iPhone 12, will get all 5G models.

With usage, the presence of 5G is very obvious. It doesn't really affect the calls or many other things you do with your wireless device. Spam will also be annoying in the same way (although it will come to you soon) and your access to social media will not change. However, applications that consolidate data, including games and other types of roaming software, will be smoother, and data access will happen much faster. All in all, it will be a better feeling.
