find Verizon's millimeter-wave 5G on
certain streets in D.C., and across the Potomac River in North Virginia. Verizon's Nationwide 5G covers a large area
of the metropolitan area near D.C., but there are many gaps where there
is no 5G - especially in poor and rural areas.
AT&T
shows 5G coverage in a large area,
but does not distinguish between millimeters, low bandwidth and 5G band bandwidth. The integration is better
than Verizon but not as perfect as the availability of T-Mobile, which is
almost universal.
The iPhone
12 will notify you when you are in a 5G

The results
were encouraging. In areas with 5G
signal strength, I was constantly seeing a download speed of 130 megabits per
second. In areas with mid-band coverage, the speed is measured at more than
300 mbps. This is high enough to do things like transfer large files or
download apps. I was able to download the iOS update while sitting in the
basement of Washington VA Hospital, an area that had no cell phones before.
5G
installation is always solid
Examining
the scope of the low 5G band, I headed southwest from Washington to
Charlottesville, Va., I found solid 5G cover all the way. On the same route a
few weeks ago, 4G LTE coverage was visible in some areas, but 5G coverage was strong. Most of the
area is very rural, which is also encouraging.
AT&T low
band coverage and distance features can be similar to what I found with T-Mobile.
However, AT&T coverage is less complete. While the most densely populated
areas in the Northeast are well covered,
5G ceases to be available less than 100 miles south of Washington.
Verizon's 5G is becoming smaller in southern Washington, although major cities
are covered.
While you
may not be affected by the installation of 5G
near Washington, the same basic features will still be available in any area
near you. Typically, T-Mobile coverage will be available in most locations,
with faster coverage in areas where Sprint had a visible presence. The spread
of the T-Mobile millimeter-wave is found in seven major cities.
AT&T has
its own 5G nationwide distribution that
is widely available in the U.S., but it is not as widespread as the one
T-Mobile has. However, it is available even in rural areas using its 850MHz
network. Verizon covers major cities, and their millimeter-wave coverage is
growing. Whereas Verizon had a few corners of unpaved roads, it now has many
highways connected to D.C. and other major cities. However, Verizon coverage
nationwide is very limited.

To find out
how this affects you, your best bet is to look at the carrier maps for each
carrier, but while useful, they are not as specific as they could be. For
example, while it's easy to see where Verizon's 5G signal is located, T-Mobile maps will only show their low and
mid-band coverage. AT&T shows 5G but doesn't say what kind.
Not all 5G
devices work with all 5G signals
It is also
important to note that not all 5G devices work with all 5G signals. Depending on the device, some may not work
with millimeter-wave 5G, for example, while others may not work with
band-low 5G. It is probably best to make sure that there is a good return
policy so you can get your device back if it can't get 5G in your area. Note that most high-end 5G devices,
including the iPhone 12, will get all 5G models.
With usage,
the presence of 5G is very obvious.
It doesn't really affect the calls or many other things you do with your
